Emily Black
About The Artist
Emily Black is an artist and designer whose work is rooted in a deep appreciation for nature, texture, and the expressive simplicity of black-and-white illustration. Focusing on line, tone, and detail, she uses contrast to communicate emotion and atmosphere without relying on color.
Background
Emily grew up on the south coast of England, where she spent her childhood sketching seashells, textured bark, pressed flowers, and other natural objects that captured her attention. This early fascination with observation and detail led her to explore creative fields more formally.
In 2018, she moved to the United States, living in both San Francisco and Boston. The dramatic shift in landscapes, from coastlines and lakes to deserts, canyons, and mountains-deepened her connection to nature and continues to inspire the organic forms and quiet storytelling present in her work.
Qualifications & Creative Development
Emily studied Interior Design and Textile Design, disciplines that strengthened her understanding of composition and surface pattern. During this time, she developed a particular interest in creating digital prints for fashion and interiors, a practice that continues to influence the refinement and presentation of her artwork today.
Over the years, she has honed her distinctive style of monochrome illustration-hand-drawn, nature-inspired, and detailed. By combining traditional drawing techniques with digital tools, Emily brings together craftsmanship and modern versatility, maintaining the warmth and intention of handmade art while achieving high-quality, polished results.
Artistic Approach
Emily's work centers on the belief that handmade art carries a unique sense of intention, emotion, and connection.
Through the simplicity of black-and-white illustration, she aims to invite viewers to pause, look closely, and reconnect with the quiet details often overlooked in everyday life.
Her art serves as a reminder that even in a digital world, there is still room for stillness, softness, and the grounding presence of nature.
