About Emily Black
Nature has always been at the heart of my work.
I'm Emily Black, a British botanical artist based in the USA, creating hand-drawn botanical art inspired by the Architecture of Nature.
Through original fine-liner illustration, I explore the intricate structures, sculptural forms, flowing lines and quiet rhythms found in flowers, foliage and plant life. I’m fascinated by the balance, pattern and natural geometry found in the world around us, and by the details that can so easily go unnoticed.
Each illustration begins with careful observation and is drawn by hand, transforming these natural details into timeless fine art prints designed to bring character, beauty and a connection to nature into collected, artful interiors.
Inspired by the architecture of nature
I've always been fascinated by the relationship between nature, art and design. From the elegance of Gothic architecture and the flowing lines of Art Nouveau to contemporary organic interiors, nature has inspired artists and designers for centuries.
The delicate framework of a leaf, the symmetry of a flower or the movement of a stem all reveal an architecture of their own. These natural forms are the starting point for every illustration I create.

My process
Every artwork begins with careful observation before being drawn entirely by hand using fine liner pens. Each illustration is created line by line, celebrating the intricate textures, patterns and character that make every botanical subject unique.
Once complete, the original drawing is thoughtfully refined while preserving its handcrafted quality before being reproduced as a museum-quality fine art print.
Rather than working in stark black and white, I soften each piece into rich charcoal and warm ivory tones, creating artwork with a timeless, understated aesthetic.
A design-led perspective
Before becoming a full time artist, I studied Interior Design before completing a degree in Textile Design, specializing in digital print.
That design background continues to influence my work today; not only how I compose each illustration, but how I imagine it living within collected, artful interiors.
Creating timeless botanical art
My hope is to create artwork that celebrates the beauty of nature while bringing a sense of character and craftsmanship into everyday living spaces.
Thank you for visiting Emily Black Designs. I hope you enjoy exploring the collection.
