About Emily Black

Emily Black

Hello and welcome!

I’m Emily Black, an artist based in Boston, Massachusetts. Originally from a small town on the south coast of England, where I spent most of my childhood drawing from nature, whether that was in botanical gardens, at the beach, or anywhere I could sit and sketch for hours.

I’ve always been drawn to pattern and contrast. The veins on leaves, the shadows on flower petals, the textures and tiny details in nature have always been what catch my attention most.

I first studied Interior Design before going on to complete a degree in Textile Design, where I focused on digital print for fashion. I grew up at a time when traditional hand-crafted techniques were still a huge part of design education and I loved learning processes like dyeing and screen printing. But discovering digital print completely changed my perspective. I really enjoyed combining hand drawing with digital composition, creating artwork by hand first, then using Photoshop to arrange patterns, adjust color and build the final design.

That blend of traditional and digital continues to shape the way I create today.

Each piece begins as a hand drawing using fine liner pens, always in black and white. I’m drawn to the clarity this creates, allowing me to focus closely on line, texture and natural detail. Once complete, the drawings are scanned and developed digitally, where I refine composition, scale and tonal backgrounds. This process introduces softness and balance, bringing the work into a more considered final form, bringing the beauty of nature into interiors.

Alongside drawing itself, research has always been one of my favourite parts of the creative process. My ideas usually come from one of two places: either I spot a print in fashion or interiors that inspires a certain botanical style, or I’m simply inspired by the nature around me.

Since moving to the US, I’ve been lucky enough to explore so many different landscapes that constantly influence my work. From sculptural desert cacti on the west coast to the layered textures and colours of New England in the fall, inspiration always seems to find its way into my drawings.

Right now, I’m selling unframed art prints and shipping across the US, Canada and the UK while I grow this little business. Keeping things simple for now feels like the right place to start and I’m excited to slowly expand both my collection and where I ship to over time.

I’m so happy you’re here and I can’t wait to share more of my work and future plans with you.
