Emily Black Designs

Hello
Hello, I’m Emily Black, a British artist based in the USA, specializing in hand-drawn botanical drawings rendered in a timeless, engraving-influenced style.
My Story
My connection to drawing began early.

As a child growing up in England, I was always sketching outdoors: in parks, gardens, along hedgerows and beaches, developing a habit of close observation that has never left me. Nature has remained a constant source of inspiration, shaping not only what I draw, but how I see. The plants and landscapes of the British countryside, in particular, formed an early visual language that continues to inform my work today.

After high school, I completed a BTEC National Diploma in Interior Design before going on to earn a BA (Hons) degree in Textile Design. Across every discipline, drawing was the aspect of design that resonated most deeply with me. I have always been drawn to a hand-rendered approach, whether interpreting organic forms shaped by Art Nouveau influences within interior spaces, or developing floral patterns inspired by direct observation of plants and the intricate ornamentation found in historic architecture, antique jewellery, and furniture.

Today, my practice is firmly rooted in observational drawing from nature. Each piece is created through direct study, with an emphasis on understanding form rather than stylizing it. Line is the dominant force in my work: fine, controlled contours combined with layered cross-hatching and subtle tonal build-up. This approach draws on the visual language of historical engraving and British natural history illustration, giving the drawings a tactile, timeless quality.

All illustrations are drawn by hand in black ink. Once complete, I use Photoshop sparingly to refine the artwork for print, preserving the integrity of the original drawing while preparing it for archival reproduction. A soft white background is introduced to avoid harsh contrast and to maintain the gentle, vintage character that defines my work.

Through my drawings, I aim to create fine art prints that invite slow looking. Works that feel considered, enduring, and rooted in a lifelong relationship with nature, craft, and observation.
